Albuquerque Country Club
Special thanks to Brad Tepper - a
historian of the Albuquerque Country Club who was able to provide
documents regarding the purchase of their old property by the Sigma Chi
Alumni. The Beta Xi Chapter of Sigma Chi was
chartered in 1916. This was 61 years after the founding of Sigma Chi in
1855 and 27 years after the founding of UNM in 1889. The Chapter house
was located at Central Ave and Terrace.Enjoyment
of the game of golf dominated their leisure time, and it was the game
of golf that motivated twenty-two local businessmen to incorporate in
April, 1914. In time, they established a five-hole golf course with
gravel fairways and sand "greens" near the present north UNM golf
course. The view was magnificent in those days, and although golfers
fought dust storms and rattlesnakes, the game was just as enjoyable (and
as frustrating) in 1914 as it is now. Legend has it that during a
tournament once played on the old sand course, the wind was so strong
that golf balls pitched onto the green would be blown right back off.
But those were good days, with dances, parties and social gatherings of
members at the club house. Though wives appeared on the scene for these
activities, they were never seen on the golf course. Things were
very different in 1914; our ladies couldn't even vote. . .
