Country Club Attire

In the fall of 1897, a group of Los Angelenos organized a voluntary association to further the cause of one of Southern California’s newest sports. The Los Angeles Golf Club, as they called themselves, leased a sixteen-acre vacant lot at the corner of Pico and Alvarado Streets and laid out a nine-hole course. Called “The Windmill Links”, the course was named for a makeshift Clubhouse - the bottom of an abandoned windmill. Through the middle of 1898, this site served as the Club’s home until the course became too crowded. The Club located its next site at what was called Pico Heights at Hobart and 16th Streets. The new home was named The “Convent Links” for its location behind a Convent near Rosedale Cemetery. Again, nine holes were laid out for play, but by the spring of 1899, this course and Clubhouse had also become overcrowded.

The course rating is 74.4 and it has a slope rating of 131 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Ron Garl, the Bloomingdale golf course opened in 1983. Fore Golf Services manages this facility, with Maryann Zeleski as the General Manager.

Monarch Beach is close to the city-boundary between Dana Point and Laguna Niguel, which are both included in Orange County's "Beach Cities" area (although Laguna Niguel does not have any coastline). It consists of some residences, but is also a tourist attraction for rich and, occasionally, famous travelers. The name "Monarch Beach" is often referenced as the name of the city, in place of Dana Point, to make the area sound more appealing to such travelers. This intentional misnomer is the source of many complaints among most other Dana Point locals.

Corpus Christi Country Club

From the 1919 Hurricane to the discovery of oil, the City’s fortunes have been closely reflected in the history of the Club. The city’s first golf course was located on North Beach and was washed away in the 1919 storm. Corpus Christi Golf & Country Club was established in 1922 on the old Kaler farm on Up River Road. In the mid 1930’s oil was discovered on the course. Oil wells were located on the 3rd and 18th holes. During the great depression, lunch prices were dropped to 50¢ and the women’s golf association gave away golf balls for prizes. The Club was kept busy during the war years hosting parties, tournaments and dances. Defense bonds were given as prizes. The 1950’s ushered ina new era of prosperity for both the City and the Club.In 1964 the Club was moved from Up River Road to it's present location at 6300 Everhart Road, where an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones designed course, new clubhouse and tennis facility were built. The new location continues to host the City's finest social and athletic events.
